Nyckel UI Technologies LLC (“NUIT”), an affiliate of Longhorn IP, announced today that it has entered into a patent license agreement with Nokia Corporation (“Nokia”). The agreement provides Nokia with a license to NUIT’s portfolio of patents covering foundational innovations in LTE‑M, NB‑IoT, and Machine‑Type Communications (MTC) technologies. All terms of the agreement are confidential.

Nokia is a global leader in telecommunications infrastructure, 5G networks, cloud‑native software, and AI‑enabled technologies. Its decision to license NUIT’s portfolio underscores the technical relevance and industry adoption of the patented innovations that enable large‑scale IoT connectivity across LTE and 5G networks.

NUIT previously acquired a portfolio of patents directed to 3GPP‑aligned MTC technologies, including LTE‑M (LTE‑Machine) and NB‑IoT (Narrowband‑IoT)—the two cornerstone low‑power wide‑area (LPWA) technologies enabling massive IoT deployments worldwide.

LTE‑M and NB‑IoT are essential to the global IoT ecosystem, providing extended coverage, ultra‑low power consumption, and secure connectivity for billions of devices. These technologies form the backbone of emerging smart‑service sectors, including:

  • Public safety and emergency response

  • Healthcare and remote monitoring

  • Industrial automation and robotics

  • Smart utilities and energy management

  • Transportation, logistics, and fleet telematics

  • Smart cities and infrastructure monitoring

As 3GPP’s designated technologies for massive Machine‑Type Communications (mMTC), LTE‑M and NB‑IoT are core components of both LTE‑Advanced Pro and 5G NR, enabling operators to scale IoT deployments with reliability, efficiency, and global interoperability.

The patented technologies in NUIT’s portfolio correspond to key technical features incorporated into LTE‑M and NB‑IoT, including innovations in power‑saving mechanisms, extended coverage enhancements, signaling optimization, random‑access procedures, and low‑complexity device operation. These innovations are fundamental to enabling the performance, efficiency, and scalability required for modern IoT networks.

NUIT’s portfolio is also licensed through major industry licensing platforms, including the Avanci IoT Platform, which provides licenses to a broad range of global automotive and IoT manufacturers. Through these platforms, NUIT’s patented technologies are already licensed to a significant portion of the global automotive industry and other IoT ecosystem participants.

“NUIT’s portfolio represents some of the most important innovations in LTE‑M and NB‑IoT—technologies that have become indispensable to the global IoT landscape,” said Khaled Fekih‑Romdhane, Manager of NUIT. “We are pleased to reach this agreement with Nokia, a company whose leadership in 5G and IoT infrastructure continues to shape the future of connected technologies.”

NUIT’s portfolio further strengthens the position of Longhorn IP’s managed 5G and IoT patent assets. In its 2025 global 5G patent landscape report, LexisNexis highlighted Longhorn IP’s rapid rise in the rankings, noting that “Longhorn IP, having acquired 5G portfolios from FG Innovation and Shanghai Langbo, has improved its ranking from 83 to 38.”
